My Early Days of Spirit Writing
How my deceased uncle helped me learn a new technique for spirit communication.
Bob Olson is a former skeptic and private eye who has investigated life after death for 27 years. He shares meaningful stories to expand minds, comfort grief, and uplift souls. He’s the host of Afterlife TV, author of Answers About The Afterlife and The Magic Mala, and founder of the directory of credible psychics, mediums, animal communicators, and intuitive practitioners, BestPsychicDirectory.com.
After a year of studying psychics and mediums, in 2001, I heard about a spirit communication technique called “automatic writing.” This is a process of shutting your conscious mind off to allow your unconscious mind to take over your writing, allowing your spirit guides to write (communicate) through you.
If you’ve read my article on Spirit Writing from a year ago, you’ll remember that I altered the name from “automatic writing” to “spirit writing” because I didn’t feel like anything was automatic about the process. In reading about people who practice automatic writing, it seemed their hands and fingers were typing words without their conscious minds being part of the process. Some folks claimed they could converse with a friend while their fingers typed something utterly unrelated. That was not my experience.
For this reason, I will refer to this process of automatic writing as spirit writing.
For those of us who will probably never become mediums, spirit writing is a tool we can use to communicate with spirits on our own. It allows people like you and me to communicate with our deceased loved ones and spirit guides without the need for a medium. When you think about it, that’s pretty cool. It will save us a lot of money on reading fees and allow those ongoing relationships to flourish, giving us better access to the love and guidance of our supporting spirits.
In the spring of 2001, I decided to try it to see what results I might have. As a writer, my typing skills were such that my fingers typed words as fast as I could think of them. It seemed like an interesting experiment to type my thoughts before I could think about what I was writing. I wasn’t confident I could do spirit writing, but I knew there was no harm in trying.
I meditated first to get into a relaxed state of mind. I’m not all that great at meditation, but I found it helpful to use headphones and some relaxing music to shut off any outside distractions and slow down my brainwaves. I’m one of those people who often falls asleep while meditating. If snoring were a sign of deep meditation, monks and yogis would be at my door asking to learn my secret methods. Once relaxed, I placed my fingers over my keyboard. Although some people can just begin typing, I find it helpful to ask a question to get started.
I did this three times weekly for twenty minutes over a few weeks without reading what I had written. When I finally did, I was shocked at the results. The words didn’t sound like me. First of all, what was written was too wisdom-ish. It had a different tone and rhythm. I’m no guru, and I don’t write like the great philosophers, yet this stuff was full of insight and was written with a hint of philosophical flair.
Below is an example of one of my early spirit writings and what transpired after reading it. Now that you are used to my writing style, you will notice that the words being written are dissimilar to the way I usually write:
You are energy. You are all energy. Energy. Remember yourself as energy, and more will begin to make sense. When you remember a past life, when you connect with a person across the country or the world telepathically, when strange unexplainable coincidences occur that you cannot make sense of, this is because you are energy, and until you see yourself as such, you will not be able to make sense of it all.
Energy is all we are. Your temporary human existence is like a ride at Disney World. You are traveling through space inside a body. Consider this body your vehicle. Like your car, you must treat your body well to get the most mileage out of it. But do not get too attached to it. It is only temporary. You will have other cars and thus other bodies.
There are no limitations to your destinations. The only limitations are within your belief system. You cannot drive to a location that you do not believe exists. You would not even try. You would never leave your driveway if someone told you to drive to Atlantis. You do not believe Atlantis exists, so you would not attempt to get there. The same is true with your destinations in life. If you can think it, you can and will get there. You have heard it said, “You must know where you are going to get there.” That is related to this concept. It is not necessary to have a map or route planned out. It is only required to have a destination.
“Destinations Unlimited” would be a good title for a book on this teaching. “Think it, and it will be” is the lesson. Think of yourself as energy, and you can make anything happen. Energy is without limitations. Human form is a sluggish energy, but your mind allows you to make anything happen. Your mind is pure consciousness and is not sluggish. It is pure energy, and it is faster than light.
Do not let your sluggish human form fool you into thinking you are limited in your power to create change. Remember where you came from, your home in the spiritual dimension. You are energy, and you have no limitations. Solid forms are energy, too. Solid forms are those with the lowest movement. Density is the challenge. Density is the challenge of human existence. You must remember that even dense objects are energy, but humans often fail to recognize that. Knowing that all is energy, even the densest substances, you will know everything can be changed.
But change must first happen for humans within their minds. Every change begins with thought. Thought then sends the signal out into the Universe, and it manifests. You cannot know how this manifestation occurs as a human, so you must trust. But the results will prove it is true, allowing you to trust even more the next time. As your trust improves, so will your ability to manifest what you originate in your thoughts. Then, it will begin to occur faster.
Belief—knowledge from learning and experience—limits us in human form. You must open your mind to the possibilities of what you want to manifest, not what you think is possible. Do you want to achieve world peace? Then believe it can be done. Trust that it can be done. Do you want to manifest change in form, society, or yourself? Then, first, believe it is possible, even if you cannot conceive how that will occur. It is not for you to know how it will happen. It is only for you to imagine. Then, focus your thoughts on that outcome. Imagine the details so your outcome can manifest precisely how you see it. With the details in your thoughts, the Universal energy will create it as you see it in your mind’s eye.
Then, follow your intuition. If you feel compelled to go somewhere, go there. If you feel compelled to talk to some stranger, speak to that person. If you feel compelled to call someone for help or advice, make that call. Follow what the Universal energy is guiding you to do. It is trying to help you manifest your desires, what is in your mind’s eye. By trusting that you are being guided, you will manifest your desired outcome much faster than if you do not assist in the process. Yet, even without your help, it will still happen if you continue to focus and believe. It may just take longer.
Outcomes are achieved in stages. Manifestation does not occur by twitching your nose but by progressing through “levels” of manifestation. As these levels progress, puzzle pieces are brought together in a way you cannot imagine as a human. You can only trust that it is so. As the puzzle is completed, your desired thought will be your outcome.
Everyone has this power of human thought energy, but few people know about it. Even those who have learned of this great power of manifestation are limited in their ability to use it because of their doubting belief system. You have been one of those people. For years, you studied the power of thought but never believed it contained the level of influence to create that some people claimed. Now we are telling you that it is true. And there is a reason for you to know this now. There is a purpose that you need to fulfill that only trust in this manifestation process will allow you to achieve. This is the key. It is time for you to open many doors with this key.
You must now begin to practice opening doors. With practice, you will learn the infinite possibilities that exist with this key. As you gain control of your newfound ability, you will grow in your limitless possibilities, empowering you to make the world a better place in a way that only you can do.
Since every person is unique, every human has a fingerprint that allows them to touch others in their distinctive way. With this key, it is your time to touch the world in a way that only you can do. Open your mind to the possibilities. With this key, what will you do to create change? That is the new question to ask yourself.
I don’t know about you, but I think that stuff is a little heavy. I prefer a lighter approach. The exciting part is that I was the person who wrote it. For the longest time, I was skeptical that I had the ability for spirit writing. I was the first person to view it with a cynical eye, which is precisely what I did one day while Melissa and I were at our friend Sally’s house, who is a medium.
“That’s great that you’ve learned to do this,” Sally said about my spirit writing.
“Yeah, but he doesn’t fully believe in it,” said Melissa.
“What do you mean he doesn’t believe in it?” Sally said. “He’s doing it!”
Melissa looked at me with one of those “Well, explain yourself, Mr. Skeptical” looks.
“I’ll admit that my spirit writing doesn’t sound like anything I would write. But I usually know what I’m typing, so it’s hard for me to know that I’m not simply recording my own thoughts,” I told them.
“Well, I know for sure that it’s not your thoughts because I know who is coming through—he’s right here now,” said Sally.
Melissa and I looked at each other with curious expressions.
“Okay, who is it?” I challenged.
“It’s your Uncle Donald,” said Sally.
Well, I did have an Uncle Donald, my father’s older brother, who had passed a year before my father. I call him Uncle Duck, but mediums often get formal names before they get nicknames. Still, I wouldn’t let this one pass so quickly. To believe Uncle Duck was helping me with my spirit writing, Sally would need to present some evidence. I needed to know he was present to believe he was assisting me with my spirit writing.
Sally knew nothing about my Uncle Duck. I had never mentioned him to her. But there was something personal and distinct about Uncle Duck that she could never have known. He had a tattoo on the top of each foot. So I decided to test Sally to see if she could tell me about these tattoos as evidence that Uncle Duck was really in the room.
“Let’s see,” I began. If you can prove that Uncle Duck is here, I’ll believe he communicates with me through my spirit writing. I’m thinking of something unique about him to prove he’s with us now. Can you tell me what that is?”
“Oh boy,” Melissa said, “you really like to test everything, don’t you?”
“In my defense,” I protested, “I’m not asking for much. There is one thing Sally can tell me about Uncle Duck that will prove he is communicating with her right now. If she gets it, I’ll take her word that he’s coming through in my spirit writing. Why else would he be here during this conversation? That’s fair, isn’t it?”
“Fair enough,” said Sally, “I’ll see what he tells me.”
I smirked at Melissa. She rolled her eyes.
There was a moment of silence while Sally waited for Uncle Duck to tell her the information I needed.
“He’s showing me that he loved fishing,” said Sally.
That was true. Anyone who knew my uncle also knew he was a fishing enthusiast. In fact, I have fond memories of fishing with him as a boy. But that wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted the tattoos on his feet. So I told Sally she was right about the fishing but that I was looking for something else.
“All right, he tells me he was in the military,” said Sally.
During World War II, Uncle Duck was in the Navy on the USS Enterprise. While in the Navy, he got the tattoos on his feet. He was a war hero who saved the lives of many men during a fire on that aircraft carrier. He also had a lot of military memorabilia from that war around his house. If you knew Uncle Duck, you knew he was in the military. Still, that wasn’t the evidence I wanted.
I told Sally, “That’s correct, but still not what I’m looking for.”
She took a deep breath, sighed, and looked to Uncle Duck for something more.
“I got it,” she said with a smile. He had a tattoo. That’s what you’re looking for, isn’t it?” Sally grinned with certainty that she had got it.
“Not bad, not bad. That is what I wanted. But if you can get that, I need to know where the tattoo was on his body,” I told Sally.
Melissa slapped me gently.
“Hey, I just want to be sure he’s here. If she gets this, I’m convinced.”
Sally sat in silence for a minute. She was lounging on two stools, sitting on one stool while resting her feet on another like a human bridge. Suddenly, a big smile filled her face, and she began wiggling her toes.
“What?” I asked.
“The tattoo was on his feet,” she said, knowing she had hit the mark.
“Oh my God, I can’t believe you got it,” Melissa said.
She did. I wasn’t even disappointed that she only mentioned one tattoo. Now, it would be more difficult to question what was happening with my spirit writing. This exchange helped me to trust my spirit writing.
After several months, I came to understand that the intelligence coming through in my spirit writing had changed from a single spirit (Uncle Duck) to a group entity. I was never given a name for them, but this group gave me the secret to turning my calling as an afterlife investigator into a career in the piece above. I think Uncle Duck helped me learn the technique, then stepped aside once I got better at it.
While profound in its wisdom, the advice in that writing is relatively simple. Imagine your desired destination without drawing a roadmap for getting there. I felt like they were telling me, “We know better than you. Let us figure out the best route to where you want to go. We’ll lead you there. All you need to do is see yourself at the destination.”
They followed that initial advice with the answer to my next question, which I didn’t even have to ask. Well, how will I know which direction to go?
They told me to follow my intuition and said they’d guide me through the intuitive impulses that would come to me. If I feel compelled (intuitively) to call someone, I should call that person. If I feel compelled to go somewhere, I should go there. If I feel compelled to talk to a stranger on the street, I should start a conversation with that person. I think that they were telling me—telling all of us—it’s not complicated. Keep it simple.
There were so many roads taken to get where I am today. I’m still amazed at the complexity of the guidance required to get me here. Despite my spirit writing and story from last week about writing a book that felt like it flowed to me, I’m not a channel. Paul Selig is a channel. Jane Roberts is a channel. I’m just the guy next door who has learned how to tap into spiritual guidance, and I’m convinced that if I can do it, anyone can.

With love,
Bob

Bob, yes I'll try it. Let you know if I hit pay dirt. Basenji dogs have a low key sound. Mostly though, they remain quiet. They require much caring. Don't care for closed confines. They try to escape. But, ultimately we love them.
Bob, thank you for this. When you originally posted on Spirit Writing, it really resonated with me. I had learned a similar approach (but a bit more complex) many years ago, and I fully appreciated your choice of "spirit writing" as accurate and more accessible. At that time, too, I had wondered what it looked like for you - and now, to my pleasant surprise, you did share. Both the gentle wisdom, and the loving softness, mirror what I have experienced with the practice. Your share has affirmed for me what I have received in my spirit writing more than I could have ever expected.
I am grateful that you followed up with a new post on this topic; it's inspiring me to return to this as part of my healing and growing journey.
