Will I See My Pet Again in the Afterlife?
What I discovered in my investigation of the afterlife to establish if pets have souls.

Many people think of their pets as family members. I’m one of those people. Folks who love their pets in this way often wonder if our pets go home to the afterlife like the people in our lives. Ultimately, we want to know if we’re going to see them again after our passing.
Another way of asking this question would be to ask: Do pets have souls? For those of you who read my write-up about the difference between souls and spirits, you’ll understand this article better. If you haven’t read it, you might want to read that first.
This article presents the evidence I’ve discovered regarding this subject in my investigation of life after death. I’ll also discuss what is included in the pet category. Surely, we want to know if dogs, cats, horses, and hamsters have souls, but what about reptiles, fish, and arachnids? Many people have snakes, goldfish, and spiders as pets too, so let’s dig into what’s included and what isn’t.
Let’s Get Evidential
Will I see my pet again in the afterlife? The answer to this question is a resounding YES. Pets have souls (and spirits) just like people, and they too go to the afterlife. Here’s the evidence that exists to support this.
First, I’ve been to many events where mediums have given readings to random audience members from the stage, and the mediums often mention seeing an audience member’s deceased dog, cat, horse, guinea pig, or snake. In almost every case, the medium was able to describe what the pet looked like, its personality, and any uniquely identifying characteristics about the pet that only the owner knew—all with uncanny accuracy.
Many people, including myself, have also had private readings with mediums where deceased pets have come through. In my own readings, my pets typically make an appearance to let me know they’re present. "I just saw a small brown dog with white spots run by,” one medium told me. My pets don’t have a lot to say, but they make their presence known.
A few years ago, I was on the phone with a medium who specialized in animal communication. She was in contact with my dog’s soul during euthanasia. A veterinarian came to our home to assist Libby into the afterlife because she could no longer get out of bed. Through the animal communicator, our sweet Labrador had a lot to say both before and after she passed that was both comforting and reassuring that we were doing the right thing. The fact that she was still communicating with Melissa and me after she had died spoke volumes about the subject of this article.
Second, numerous people, including Melissa, have had dream visitations from deceased pets. Often in these dreams, the pet will communicate to the person having the dream. This might seem weird to some, but spirits communicate with us telepathically, so no words need to be spoken. In these dream visitations, they often convey that they are still around, happy in the afterlife, and will be there when the person having the dream crosses over into the spiritual dimension.
In one dream, Melissa had a beloved cat show up to her a couple months after he had passed. He showed up to say hello. In another dream, our black Lab, Libby, showed up in a dream just after we’d adopted two young dogs from the shelter. Libby showed herself to Melissa with all white fur. She conveyed the presence of a wise old canine. Libby told Melissa she would be helping to guide our new pups as they were growing up.
Third, people who have had near-death experiences have explained that our souls experience life in many life forms. I’ll dig deeper into this in a moment.
Let’s Get Logical
When we really analyze this subject, we realize it’s human arrogance to think that we’re the only species that gets to go to the afterlife or that we’re the only species that has a spirit and a soul. It is our spirit that gives us our life energy (and our consciousness). Said another way, our spirit turns our bodies from mere flesh and bones into walking, talking, thinking beings. So if there’s a species on earth that has life, then there’s a spirit and a soul associated with it.
Based on the near-death experiencers I’ve interviewed (some on Afterlife TV), our souls have experienced life as many species and in many places, so this would include experiencing life as animals. I’m not implying that “the you who you know as you” has experienced life as an animal because “the you who you know as you” is your spirit, and your spirit only experiences one life. It is your soul—your higher self (your whole self)—that experiences many lives, which includes having experiences as other living species. So your soul has likely experienced life as an animal through a spirit that your soul created for that lifetime.
My experience is that most people who ask if pets have souls are not wondering if they, personally, have had a life as an animal. That’s a subject for another article. Most people ask this question because they wonder if they will see their beloved pet in the afterlife or if they can communicate with their deceased pet now. You now know the answer to both questions is yes. In fact, most of what you learn about humans in my articles on Bob Olson Connect will pertain to your pets as well, and that includes your pet birds, spiders, rabbits, chickens, snakes, and turtles.
As I suggested earlier, your pets will be able to communicate with you from the afterlife despite your animal’s inability to speak our language while here on the earth plane. Since communication in the afterlife is by thought (not language), animals can talk to us in our dreams, during meditation, through spirit writing, and through mediums (animal communicators). Their thoughts convert to language in the spirit world in whatever language we speak.
So if you’ve lost a pet, rest assured that they are steeped in the love of the afterlife and are surrounded by other people and pets who love them. In fact, feel free to talk to them as if they were in the room with you because they are watching over you just like all our deceased loved ones do.
My warmest wishes,
Bob

PS, Two recommended books: There’s a wonderful book by Kim Sheridan titled Animals and the Afterlife that covers this subject in great detail. And Danielle MacKinnon, who I interviewed about pets and the afterlife on Afterlife TV, has a new book out, The Incredible Animal Afterlife. I haven’t read it yet but can bet it’s fantastic because everything Danielle does is fantastic.

Hi Bob, another lovely piece. In fact, only today I was talking to girlfriends about animals having souls and two days ago, I was looking amongst my books for Kim Sheridan's 'Animals and the Afterlife', which I read a few years ago. Synchronicity again!
An angle on this that often perplexes. even vexes some people, is how can we eat animal flesh if we know they have souls? Some of us can't - I'm vegan with the exception of eggs from next-door's happy chickens (all rescues from batteries). They are so happy and friendly and I know I am anthropomorphising here, perhaps they are happy for us to take their eggs in gratitude for being rescued! But I digress. It's clear that the human race is incredibly genetically diverse, so it's logical that some of us actually need to eat meat in order to function. I'm glad I'm one that doesn't.
I look forward to your Substack articles.
Thank you.
